Welcome to the Chebeague Climate Action Team
Sharing Our Progress and Local News
Welcome to the Chebeague Climate Action Team Blog! This is where our team members can share updates on the work we've been doing to promote environmental sustainability within Casco Bay. We'll also be sharing local news about events and initiatives related to the environment and sustainable practices.
Call for Photos
Have you taken photos or videos of tides, storm damage, or coastal flooding? The Chebeague Climate Action Team is collecting photos as part of our Climate Vulnerability Assessment process. While we are especially interested in photos following the recent January 2024 storms, any and all tide photos are appreciated. If you have historical or ‘before’ photos of areas damaged by recent storms, those pictures are also welcome. Please submit your photos using the button below or by visiting http://tinyurl.com/CCATstormphotos. Thank you for your contributions!
CCAT Tasks
Task 1: Municipal and Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory
A Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory of the community and municipal sectors will be completed to:
• Understand the primary sources of emissions in the community.
• Guide Chebeague’s emission reduction efforts.
• Establish emission reduction goals and track progress towards those goals. • Facilitate decision-making about future policies and strategies.
The town staff and community members will work with the GHG Inventory contractor to provide information on the community’s energy use, heating sources, vehicles, miles, etc
Task 2: Groundwater Sustainability Study
Chebeague Climate Action Team is proposing to complete a Groundwater Sustainability Study, which will evaluate climate related impacts on the town’s groundwater supply. The proposed project will build on previous town wide groundwater studies completed in 1992, 2002 and 2005 by Carol White.
Task 3: Chebeague Island Climate Vulnerability Assessment
Building on Chebeague’s 2016 Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and the findings of the groundwater study, we propose to complete a Comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment. The Climate Vulnerability Assessment will identify climate hazards including elevated temperatures, sea level rise, droughts, more frequent and extreme storms, etc. and the potential risks associated with those hazards. Impacts that have not previously been considered on Chebeague include increased fire risk, impacts on our fishing and maritime economy, and increasing costs due to reliance on petroleum-based fuels for our transportation and heating needs.
